The Sounds of Learning!

Picture
Our Summer Math Intensives have been a raging success!   Working in small groups with students to target their individual needs has provided so many laughs (seriously!, math is fun!!), fun playing games and competiting, and best of all, many AH-HA moments.  In fact, the shrieks have been astonishing!  I've had to try to figure out how to spell these amazing sounds (gasping for air sounds, ah-ha sounds) that unexpectedly fill the room when a student GETS it fully!

Kid quotes from our time together in the math fact fluency intensive:
  • "The threes song really helped me learn it."  [oh, you don't know the threes song, or the modern day threes song... try these!!  You'll be singing them for days!   School House Rocks Three In a Magic Number. UpTown Funk Threes Song.   No doubt music helps to memorize math facts!!
  • "When I practice more, I can memorize them better".
  • "On the 5 minute test, I got a super high score from practice!"
  • We learned about using benchmark numbers when we didn't know a fact (don't know an 8 times, you can go to 10, then do some magic and get the answer) a student said "Wow, that's going to be WAY faster! I get it now!"
  • "Each time I come, I get better than the time before!"

The student confidence is soaring!!   And... it makes our day too!!

We have another round of fluency starting next week--August 2-6.  This is ideal for rising 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th graders and any student who doesn't know their facts in 3 seconds or under.    We meet at Park Books and Literacy Lab in Severna Park on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the afternoons.
